The Need - - - - - -
Worldwide demand for advanced cancer
care has created a unique need for HTI's services. Since the
1970's, when the United States declared its aggressive 'War on
Cancer' and CDP Services began consulting to U.S. institutions,
the tremendous investment in basic science and clinical practice
research, technology and facilities has propelled the U.S. model
of cancer care to an unparalleled level. The results of these
developments are greatly improved access to high quality cancer
care for most Americans.
In contrast, there remains a great need
for improved cancer care in other areas of the world, particularly
in developing countries where more deaths occur from cancer --
some 3.5 million in 1993 compared to about 2.5 million in industrialized
nations in the same year. In the United Kingdom, long waiting
lists and high mortality rates are a recognized crises for the
UK Government. Given this need, there are a growing number of
well-trained physicians, high quality healthcare institutions
and government sectors outside of the U.S. that have a desire
to provide advanced cancer care in the comprehensive services
model prevalent in the U.S. However, few possess the expertise
and resources needed to develop a high quality, financially viable
cancer center. Partnering with HTI fills this void, reducing
risk for quality providers and advancing medical care in areas
where it is needed most.
