Cancer Facts and Figures - - - - - - Predictions from the World Health Organization indicate there will be 20 million new cancer patients each year by 2020 with 70 percent of those living in countries that between them have less than 5 percent of the world's cancer control resources. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide Cancer will be the leading cause of death everywhere except sub-Saharan Africa within the next 2 decades. The number of cancer patients will more than double by the Year 2020 from 10 million to 20 million worldwide each year. A third of those with cancer could be cured if they had access to current technology. The World Health Organization for the first time has shifted its focus -- from infectious and parasitical diseases to cancer control. Tobacco-related deaths could triple to more than 8 million a year within 25 years. (Researchers say tobacco-related health problems are growing more rapidly than the HIV epidemic, and that this problem could cause more deaths than any other single ailment.)
